5 Caribbean Herbs and their Spiritual Components

Jun 08, 2026

In the Caribbean, we understand that every herb has a spiritual component hence there is no separating the physical from the spiritual. Whether your heart is broken, or your mind is stuck in a loop of rumination, or as my Jamaican granny called it, "love sickness". She would reach for "some bush" and in no time bye bye depression and anxiety. Using herbs to cleanse via a herbal bath is customary in the Caribbean. Practiced across boundaries of color and class, this common ritualistic, healing and spiritual practice is still used today in Jamaica and across the region.

Whether you are dealing with a haunting fear, needing to manifest a miracle, getting rid of "saltness" (bad luck) or the need for protection, the herbs of Jamaica offer a roadmap back to yourself. Here are my top five herbs our Afro Caribbean ancestors used for generations.

1. Anamu (Guinea Hen Weed)

Guinea Hen Weed, also known as Anamu is a fierce protector. Because of its strong scent and energetic presence. In Caribbean folk magic and traditional herbal practices, it is used for "uncrossing" removing the bad luck or heavy energy that makes you feel small or afraid. Think of it as a deep energetic detox, but for the soul. You don't gently cleanse with Anamu. You clear the room. And honestly? That's exactly what you need when you've been carrying what isn't yours.

The Ritual: Carry a small bag of dried Anamu in your purse or pocket when you have to face a difficult conversation or a moment where you usually shrink. It builds "spiritual resilience".

Spiritual Use
Guinea Hen Weed is valued for its ability to drive away negativity and strengthen spiritual defenses. It is commonly used to:

  • Protect – Used to ward off negative energy, spiritual attack, and crossed conditions. Home & Boundary Protection: Placed near doorways or carried to prevent harm from entering (sachets and mojo bags)
  • Uncross & Cleanse – Helps remove jinxes, heavy energy, and unwanted spiritual influence (smoke cleansers and incense)
  • Personal Power – Strengthens resolve, confidence, and spiritual resilience
  • Ancestral & Rootwork Traditions – Often included in spiritual baths, floor washes, and mojo work

Traditional Health:

Anamu was commonly prepared as teas, decoctions, or infusions in traditional settings, often used short-term rather than daily.

  • Immune Support – Valued in folk practice for overall wellness and resilience
  • Inflammation & Discomfort – Used traditionally for aches, pains, and physical tension
  • Nervous System Support – Helps calm the nerves and support mental clarity
  • Circulation & Vitality – Considered a strengthening herb in traditional use
  • Respiratory Comfort – Historically used in herbal preparations for breathing support
  • Internal Cleansing – Used in folk traditions to help the body “cleanse” and reset

2. Vervain (Verbena officinalis)

Assortment of dried herbs and herbal tea ingredients arranged with labels on light linen surface

Vervain. You may know it as bervine, but once you understand its energy, you'll call it essential. This is a sacred herb with serious spiritual pedigree, we're talking Hoodoo, European folk magic, and ceremonial traditions that predate the modern self-care aisle.

The druids revered it. The Romans used it to bless temples and cleanse altars. In ancient Greece, it wasn't just an herb; it was holy. Why? Because vervain doesn't just sit on your shelf looking pretty. It purifies. It protects. It sharpens your intuition and hands you back your own power.

Whether you're setting boundaries, clearing a room of stagnant energy, or simply looking to feel a little more unfuckwithable, this is the plant you reach for. Think of it as a spiritual reset button, no crystals required (though they wouldn't hurt).

Element: Earth
Planet: Venus
Gender: Feminine
Chakra Associations: Third Eye & Heart Chakra
Magical Uses: Protection, purification, love, divination, dream work, peace, psychic enhancement, uncrossing

Common Spiritual & Magical Uses:

  • Added to spiritual baths and floor washes for cleansing
  • Burned as incense for purification and protection
  • Used in dream pillows and divination rituals
  • Carried in mojo bags for peace and spiritual strength
  • Incorporated into love, prosperity, and psychic work

    Traditional Herbal Uses:

  • Associated with relaxation and calming support
  • Traditionally used for stress and nervous tension
  • Used in herbal teas and wellness blends
  • Historically connected to digestive and sleep support

Vervain remains a respected herb in both magical and herbal traditions due to its rich folklore, protective associations, and calming nature.

3. Search Mi Heart (Rhytidophyllum tomentosum)

Endemic to Jamaica, Search Mi Heart also known as Heart Bush is a shrub that grows naturally in the island's shaded, damp, rocky hillsides. The genus Rhytidophyllum is often confused with plants used in Cuban Palo Monte or Haitian Vodou (like Begonia species known as "Heart of Jesus"). Although not traditionally classified as a ritual or magical plant my research and experience has shown it is good for using when experiencing heartbreak or a breakup. This of course is a new folk or magic association, a hypothesis if you will. Modern medicine recognizes Takotsubo cardiomyopathy ("broken heart syndrome"), a temporary heart condition triggered by extreme emotional stress (grief, loss). It has similiar symptoms to that of heart attack. When combined with other hearth strengthening herbs like sorrel or hibiscus in tonics or teas it's medicinal properties are further amplified.

Traditional Uses:

  • Heart Health: Treats palpitations and irregular heartbeat
  • Respiratory Aid: Commonly brewed as a tea for coughs, chest congestion, colds, and asthma
  • The tea is used for sinus infections and menstrual cramps

Contemporary spiritual herbalism has recently reclassified Search Mi Heart for emotional heart healing. Today, it is used in spiritual baths and candle magic specifically to:

  • Open the heart
  • Promote relaxation
  • Dispel stagnant energy
  • Promote self-forgiveness
  • Reduce stress and aid sleep

The evolution of plants like Search-Me-Heart perfectly demonstrates how traditions grow to meet new emotional needs.

4. Bay Leaves (Laurus nobilis)

The bay leaf. You've probably tossed one into a pot of soup and thought nothing of it. But here's the thing: this unassuming aromatic has been quietly working magic for centuries. We're talking protection. Prosperity. Clarity. Even a little divination if you're feeling psychic.

It works. It's called on for success, purification, and wish work because bay leaves carry the energy of victory. Power. Overcoming the obstacle that's been sitting in your path like a brick wall. It's the go-to for manifestation, psychic enhancement, and personal strength. Why? Solar energy. Wisdom. You write your intention on the leaf, set it aflame, and let the fire do what fire does best: transform.

Element: Fire

  • Protection spells, where carrying a dried bay leaf in your wallet or under your pillow wards off negative energy.
  • Prosperity and success by writing your wishes or intentions on a bay leaf, burning it in a fire-safe dish, and visualizing your goals manifesting.
  • Enhance intuition and clarity in divination practices, and placing a leaf under your pillow can encourage prophetic dreams.
  • Banishing and cleansing, whether in ritual baths or smoke-cleansing rituals to remove stagnant energy from your home or workspace
  • Manifestation - Burning bay leaves with written petitions or wishes for manifestation
  • Adding to your wallet or money-drawing and prosperity work
  • Using in floor washes or spiritual baths for cleansing and uncrossing
  • Carrying in mojo bags for protection, luck, and success
  • Burning during divination or psychic work to enhance clarity and intuition

Try this Spiritual Bath: Simmer bay leaves in water, add cinnamon sticks, and use the water in a ritual bath to attract abundance.

Traditional Health & Herbal Uses:

Bay leaves are not just magical, they have culinary and medicinal benefits. They help with digestion, relieve bloating and gas, and can be used in steam inhalation to ease congestion. Bay leaves contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds that support joint health and overall wellness. Brewing bay leaf tea may reduce anxiety and promote calmness.

5. Cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia)

Cinnamon leaves and chips are the ultimate fast-acting, high-vibe tool for clearing energy and calling in what's yours. Long prized in folk magic, witchcraft, Hoodoo, and traditional plant medicine, this warm, fiery botanical is essentially nature's accelerator. Think protection, prosperity, passion, success, and serious spiritual backbone, all rolled into one gloriously fragrant package.

Cinnamon vibrates at such a quick, solar, action-oriented frequency, it's the go-to when you need movement. Not next week. Not when Mercury goes direct. Now! Manifestation work, solar rituals, spells requiring visibility and strength, cinnamon doesn't ask questions. It just ignites.
